The object of the walk was to do a linear walk in a different area and to avoid the use of cars.

Departing from Preston Railway station at 8.28 am we arrived at Roose, near Barrow in Furness at 9.50 am. Using country lanes, field paths, tracks, green lanes and highways we followed the Cistercian Way to Ulverston.  On the first leg we gained height to overlook Barrow and the Ship Yards in one direction and the undulating landscape and Furness abbey in another.  After passing the sun lit ruins of Furness Abbey we walked through the Vale of Nightshade to reach Dalton in Furness which is a small country town with a castle.  From Dalton we headed for Standing Tarn and admired the view at lunch time.  On the next leg we were unable to find the correct path because of a realignment of fences and two sets of well secured gates. However, we found an alternative track close by. Continuing we used a green lane and skirted around Little Urswick Crags to reach Little Urswick itself.  Using more green lanes we arrived at Urswick Tarn at Great Urswick. (The area around the tarn may flood in heavy rainfall).  Leaving Great Urswick we ascended a green lane to open fields to see Ulverston and its monument in the distance.  We followed limestone walls to arrive at a road.  Shortly after reaching an urban area we turned off the road to skirt around Swarthmoor Hall and pass through Kilner Park to reach Ulverston Railway Station. Six contented walkers arrived back at Preston Railway Station at approximately 5.30 pm.  The return fare, using a Senior Rail Card was £10.45.
