26 people, including 2 ladies who saw us
gathering on the car park & asked to join us, set off up the estuary
of the River Wyre passing the site of Cockle Hall, in reality a
ferryman’s cottage when there was a ferry over to Wardleys Creek. We
had a good view over to Wardleys, which was a thriving port from the
16th to 19th centuries including small emigrant ships to the USA in
the 1830s. We walked as far as the Yacht Club but as the tide was
far out no sailing this afternoon. At this point we turned inland
over fields to reach a minor road where we headed back towards
Stanah. A slight rise when crossing fields gave us really clear
views over to the Bowland Fells as we descended to the estuary path
back to our starting point. |
